We had a mixed experience during our two night stay at the Grand Aston Medan.

    The good points were:

    1. The staff
They were the highlight of our stay; they always try hard, and are very polite and friendly.

    2. The food
Dinner at Spoon Dining Lounge was very tasty, as was the included buffet breakfast. The pizza there is about the same price as the nearby Pizza Hut, but much nicer with fresh/high quality ingredients. I also recommend the capuccino and hot chocolate at the Demitasse Lounge.

    3. Room facilities
Modern and ergonomic bathroom, with a very nice shower. (I had to ask how to change from the smaller nozzle to the main shower rose, as it was almost impossible to work out.) The free in-room broadband internet was easy to use, with no password or set-up necessary. The only downside: picture quality on some TV channels was poor.

    Areas for improvement:

    1. The keycard system
It was unnecessarily tricky. Guests got one room keycard, which had to be used in the lift to access your room’s floor and then inserted into a slot near the door to activate the lights, TV, etc. If one guest wanted to go downstairs while the other one stayed in the room, you had to request an extra keycard. My parents were also staying there but on a different floor, so then our cards needed to be given access to two different floors.

    2. Efficiency in check-in
Our room was not ready, even though we had booked a long time in advance and arrived at 5pm. The amount of time needed to check in also seemed relatively long. However, while we waited we did receive an airline-style welcome drink (apple juice) and a wet towel for wiping our faces.

The Grand Aston Medan is most suitable for tourists/leisure travellers who have spare time to enjoy the many guest facilities.

It is the nearest star-rated hotel to Medan train station, ideal for travelling to nearby areas. A taxi to the airport (NOT from) will cost about $2, to the bus terminal about $6.
